How Gems Integrates Technology in Classrooms: Smart Learning for the Digital Age

Technology provides immediate access to information, which is why it is essential to have access to it in the classroom. Smartphones, computers, and tablets are already the most common in the lives of students and teachers. Therefore, it makes sense to consider how technological tools can be applied to create engaging or meaningful learning opportunities in a classroom context for students of all ages.  Using various forms of technology in the classroom, such as a virtual classroom, produces learners who are engaged with learning outcomes. During the past two years, we have undertaken several efforts to make Gems Public School lead the pack when it comes to delivering quality education to students. This has placed us as No.1 in Patiala since we’ve incorporated cutting-edge learning technologies in the classrooms carefully while keeping focus on projects of the real world.  What Does Technology Integration Mean in Education? The integration of technology into education simply refers to the usage of technology to improve the learning experience for children. Application of various forms of technology in the classroom, such as a virtual classroom, produces learners who are fully engaged with learning targets. The application of technology also provides avenues for differentiated instruction to cater to the individual requirements of students as unique learners within a general classroom environment.  How Gems Integrates Technology in Classrooms? The majority of our classrooms are fitted with smart boards that have interactive screens, projectors, and sound systems to enable more engagement and motivation of the learners in class and facilitate hybrid learning. Another instance where Gems Public School incorporates learning technology in the classrooms is through our learning management software Canvas, which enables instructors to ensure learners can access subject-specific learning materials anywhere and at any time. For our high school and middle school students, teachers utilise our LMS Canvas to design differentiated learning pathways utilising Mastery Pathways and Prerequisites for students so that learning is differentiated and optimal for all students, depending on their learning preferences and requirements.  Furthermore, this provides parents with insight into how their child is going through the term so they can offer the needed support and intervention at home. Gems Public School teaches Computer Science as part of its curriculum for students from grade 1 through grade 12 up to AS and A levels. We have provided an integrated computer science curriculum that includes strands of grade-appropriate Digital Literacy and Computing around the Cambridge prescribed curriculum. In the redesign we are undertaking now, we are relocating some of the more theoretical, Examination Board-mandated modules to subsequent grades and adding useful, highly applicable and stimulating concepts, and hands-on activities and projects in the preceding grades. This exercise aims to ensure that all students acquire the skills they would require to work with CS, AI/ML, regardless of their subject options in High School. How Gems is Using Technology in Project based learning? Gems Public School students are enthusiastically working on tech-oriented projects termed ‘Tech for Change’, which leverages computational thinking and programming abilities to develop practical solutions to real-world problems of their school and community.  This experiential, project-driven learning model not only supports collaboration and creativity but also inspires a love for technology professions as students build toward college and beyond.  Through projects, students delve into many aspects of technology and artificial intelligence, taking into account critical factors such as user experience, design, ethics, and safety that they apply to problems. This involves creating inventory management programs for the cafeteria and automating the lost and found in school. We also feel that we can lift the tide for all, and our students interact and support students in the school. Their support has opened them to coding and programming skills Ways To Upskill Teachers In Classrooms Of Gems In fact, in the context of India, most teachers are still catching up with educational technology. The pandemic years might have had a significant role in giving teachers a not-so-gentle push in becoming tech literate if they had to continue to engage their students online and, indeed, their jobs in many instances.  All the same, for most teachers, who themselves are products of a technology-free education system, this is a steep learning curve that is hard to overcome without proper training and a desire to learn.  In line with our Design with Empathy approach, we are training our staff in how to utilise different AI tools using self-directed video modules. This is to give teachers the bandwidth and time to build better relationships with students in class via targeted coaching and mentoring, all of which are key to achieving high student success. Technology Tools Used By Gems Nowadays, our teachers are employing AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Flint, and Brisk Teaching to improve their teaching efficiency and student participation. These sites enable the development of rich learning materials and solid evaluations, enabling educators to plan differentiated and tiered assignments appropriate to varied learning requirements.  For example, Brisk Teaching makes it possible to create lesson plans, quizzes, and give specific feedback effectively in familiar software such as Google Docs and Slides.  Also, interactive spaces like Padlet and Quizizz are being used to check understanding quickly, making it possible to continually assess learning in the pipeline Future Plans Of Gems In Smart Learning For The Digital Age In the coming months, we will also roll out a number of other cutting-edge initiatives to strengthen education through technology.  One of the key initiatives is working on a detailed AI policy for students and teachers alike. The policy will stress ethics and responsible use of technology to ensure that all stakeholders know how to approach AI tools responsibly and effectively. In addition, the school intends to organise workshops for instructors that address prompt engineering and how to make use of AI to enhance teaching techniques.  These workshops will provide instructors with the necessary skills to incorporate AI into lesson plans, eventually leading to a more dynamic and stimulating learning environment for students. By carrying out these activities, the school
